Context
Nyanza is one of Kenya’s poorest areas with 63% of the population living on less than $1 a day. The province has the highest HIV prevalence rate in Kenya (14%), a significant burden of malarial disease and among the lowest life expectancies in the country –age 43 for women and 37 for men. Household economies are largely supported by subsistence farming and fishing. Health Facilities: 164 – District Hospitals (4), Sub-District Hospitals (7), Dispensaries (88), Health Centres (38), Medical Clinics (14), VCT Centres (7), Other (1), Doctor to Population 1:38,707.
Intervention
RUNELD invests in local people’s health and capacity for prosperity, we offer primary health care services. Our strategies involve access to Information and Quality Healthcare care and supportive community initiatives that are much needed by OVCs and PLHA ‘community care models’-inorder to facilitate resilience in vulnerable communities. The above interventions result in reduction of death caused by AIDS related Diseases and prevention of onwards transmission of HIV.
Medical Camps Program
The Ministry of Health (Gok), Asante Nagoya Japan and The Egmont Trust are our sponsors and partners who Offer Health professionals, Technical and Financial assistance and contribute in no small measure towards the success of our free healthcare project. Asante Nagoya Japan Fundraises for Free medical supplies. Cooperate sponsors, RUNELD Members and Local community partnerships in-kind Gifts, Donations resulting in about 2.1 leverage for all financial gifts. A Hospital Van and other medical equipment have been donated by Ichinomiya Naka Lions Club.
Actions
Medical Volunteer Program
Our volunteer program includes Short term medical volunteers who take up assignment for a period of 1-2 months. We also have volunteers who work in the medical field for a period of 3months to 3 years. Finally, there are project based teams working in the Hospital to provide primary health care.
